How a DUI Case Moves Forward in Edmonds

Many people don’t realize that a Washington State DUI arrest creates more than one legal issue until it’s too late. In addition to the criminal case in court, there is a separate process through the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) that can affect your driving privileges.

At Veitch Ault Defense, we handle DUI cases throughout Snohomish County and King County and understand how both parts of the process move forward. We focus on protecting your rights, meeting deadlines, and preparing your case at each stage. Our Edmonds DUI defense attorneys and King County DUI defense attorneys have helped more than a thousand clients resolve DUI and related charges across Washington.

What Happens After a DUI Arrest?

After a DUI arrest, your ability to drive can become one of the first issues. The Department of Licensing handles that part of the case separately from the criminal court.

Important points include:

  • A DOL hearing request must be submitted within 7 days of the arrest
  • If no request is submitted, suspension or revocation usually takes effect automatically
  • The DOL process can move forward while the criminal case is still pending
  • A court result does not automatically resolve the license issue

If a hearing is requested:

  • You may be able to continue driving while waiting for the hearing
  • Most hearings are conducted by phone
  • The hearing is usually scheduled within about 60 days

About Edmonds, Washington

Edmonds, WA

Edmonds is located along the Puget Sound shoreline, about 15 miles north of Seattle and south of Everett. The city is known for its waterfront, ferry access, and walkable downtown area.

DUI enforcement in Edmonds often occurs along routes such as SR-104, Highway 99, and local roads leading to the Edmonds ferry terminal. Traffic patterns can change with commuter flow, weekend activity, and ferry traffic, which can affect where stops occur.

We also handle DUI cases in nearby Lynnwood, Everett, and throughout Snohomish County.

Edmonds DUI Court

If you are arrested for DUI in the City of Edmonds by an Edmonds Police Department (EPD) officer, your case will be filed in Edmonds Municipal Court.

  • The court is located at 250 5th Ave N, Edmonds, WA 98020
  • First appearance hearings are often scheduled within a few weeks to a couple of months after arrest
  • Arraignments are generally held on Wednesdays at 1:00 PM
  • Court assignments and personnel can change, so hearing details should be confirmed through the court or your attorney.

The City of Edmonds actively prosecutes DUI cases, and early hearings may involve conditions that affect your day-to-day activities. A DUI lawyer familiar with Edmonds cases can help you understand the court process, license deadlines, and early conditions that may apply.

Our Team Is on Your Side

If you are arrested for DUI in Edmonds, the charge is typically filed by the city attorney’s office, and a summons is mailed after the arrest. In many cases:

  • The first court date occurs within 4–6 weeks if there is no prior DUI and no blood draw
  • The case is handled in Edmonds Municipal Court
  • The City of Edmonds actively prosecutes DUI offenses

Because Edmonds includes both residential areas and high-traffic corridors near the ferry and shoreline, the details of the stop and investigation can play an important role in how the case develops.
